Disney Fantasy Online

Mickey, Donald and Goofy along with rather generic looking JRPG characters

This is a long-defunct Disney MMORPG developed by NetDragon that was exclusive to China. It intrigued me from the moment I first heard of it, and eagerly awaited its arrival in the West. That of course never happened.

The artwork on the left especially appealed to me. The non-Disney characters remind me a bit of the character designs of RPG Maker XP, resulting in this coming across as a more oldschool JRPG version of the Kingdom Hearts formula. The actual in-game screenshots I've been able to find look quite different, of course.

I don't really know much about the game, and it's probably unlikely we'll ever see a revival of it. But a cat can dream…

The installer was fortunately archived, and contains a lot of assets. Any hypothetical revival effort will probably have to start there. The soundtrack included in the installer has also been uploaded on the Internet Archive.

Pictures

A few of the screenshots and concept art I was able to find.

Patch screens

These are screens included in the installer, which showcase some nice 3D models!

Emerald City

A fantasy city or town, with a few Disney references.

Atlantica

An underwater area, presumably Atlantica.

Miscellaneous areas

Screenshots of various areas, including areas based on the Dwarf Woodlands and Disney Fairies.

Snow White Quest

Some sort of quest involving Snow White. I got these from the wayback archive, and the original page might provide some more context.

Nightmare Before Christmas

An NBC-themed expansion was announced in 2010.

Miscellaneous pictures

According to an article on Baidu, Singer Li Yuchun served as a sort of spokesperson for the game and even appeared as an NPC.

A trailer and the login screen video are also available.

Delving into the installer

If you're adventurous, there's quite a lot of stuff you can get from the installer.

These quick renders I mocked up are only a handful of the many 3D models included. Maybe somebody a bit handier than me can whip up an efficient way to convert all of them to a more usable format.

Now, how to get these. You'll need the tool https://github.com/LittleBigBug/QuickBMS and the Warlords script. The Warlords is another Netdragon MMORPG which uses the same sorts of assets.

With this tool and this script you can extract the data.tpd, c3.tpd, and map.tpd files. On the Linux commandline I did it like this:

./quickbms -d thewarlords.bms 'path/to/file.tpd'

This extracts all the files. Now, the c3 folder will contain the models, with the .c3 having the shapes and the .dds files having the graphics. You can load these in Blender using the C3-Operator add-on

It really seems like all the graphical assets are in there too. They're mostly .dds files, a format that used to be really popular for games, which can be opened by the GNU Image Manipulation Program.

Given how much assets are in there, as well as map data apparently, I wonder what server-side stuff is missing. Another game published by Netdragon, Conquest Online (which seems to share a similar engine), has private servers, so maybe a recreation of this game isn't completely impossible. It still would require more expertise than I have, as well as some knowledge of Chinese.
