Motion simulation

Venturer S2

A yellow motion simulation machine

For a few summers I spent at Center Parcs, they had a motion simulation machine called the Venturer S2. It left a strong impression on my family and I!

The Venturer S2 had a laserdisc inside with video footage, which programmer's synchronized with the machine's movements to create a somewhat realistic simulation. The videos included recordings of roller coasters and computer-generated graphics.

On this page, I'm listing all I can find about the videos offered by the Venturer S2, including who created them. My goal is to use this information as a starting point to discover more amazing experiences like this in the future.

Computer-generated videos

Time Gate To Egypt πŸŽ₯

This it it. The one I chose over and over again when I used the simulator. I had a phase were I was heavily into Ancient Egypt, and beyond devouring Encarta and rewatching The Mummy, this was one of the ways in which I could engage with my favorite subject.

A recut version of this video is part of the animation compilation TeleVoid. In the credits, we can see it is credited to director Ian Williams and producer Rocket Films Limited (England). A music album which uses stills from the video credits these to Electric Film Factory. The music video also uses footage. The album is apparently also available on Bandcamp.

The video is also mentioned in episode 13 of the fifth series of GamesMaster, a British TV show about video games, in the context of the London Computer Animation Awards. This dates the video as probably being from 1995.

Slot Car Boogie πŸŽ₯

Some fan art also attributes this to Ian Williams and Rocket Films, but I have found no actual source for this so far. It makes sense though, since I believe some of this footage is also used in the video clip mentioned for Time Gate.

Astro Canyon Coaster πŸŽ₯

See my page about nWave.

Glacier Run πŸŽ₯

When I wasn't traveling to Egypt, this video of the third disc was my alternative. Yet another banger by nWave.

Volcano Mine Ride πŸŽ₯

See my page about nWave.

RGB Adventure πŸŽ₯

Silicon Adventure πŸŽ₯*

POD πŸŽ₯

This seems to be based on the Ubisoft game POD or its sequel POD: Speedzone.

Videos with practical effects

Muggo's Revenge πŸŽ₯

Muggo's Revenge was originally published by Sega in 1992, for the Japanese market.

Smash Factory πŸŽ₯

This website credits the production to Midland, and lists the voice actor as Bob Sarlatte.

Venturing beyond…

In a next iteration, I will try to dig up other simulation footage that's got a similar vibe. This includes the rest of nWave's catalog, other early CG animations, and probably any suitable first-person rollercoaster recording.
